Plum blossoms and a Japanese bush warbler

Uguisu (Japanese bush warblers) often appear in gardens and trees in towns and villages during winter and spring. Ume trees blossom in very early spring before many other plants begin to have flowers. Therefore, Japanese bush warblers and plum blossoms are popularly featured in haiku (Japanese traditional poem) composition as seasonal words representing spring.
A Japanese bush warbler perching on a plum brunch is a typical motif that depicts a scene on an early spring day. In fact, what we see on plum brunches are in many cases white-eyes, not bush warblers. They are often confused because of the similarity in appearance.
Since the combination of the two motifs representing spring is highly impressive, “a bush warbler and plum blossom” has been a favorite theme for Japanese poets and painters since the Nara period in the 8th century. Thus, for the Japanese, bush warblers and plum blossoms are familiar and essential spring features.

Japanese "Kadomatsu" and "Kumade," new Year's decorations

Yamaha has arranged a special package of New Year's presents such as paper craft models of a Kadomatsu, a Tiger and a Kumade. These are typical symbols seen anywhere in Japan during the New Year's season. We have also prepared the 1998 New Year's calendar.

Kadomatsu is a decoration consisting of a pair of pine trees and bamboo stems. It is placed on both sides of the front entrance of a house from January 1-7. It symbolizes that the tree provides longevity, prosperity and purity for the descent of the Gods. This custom was originally started in China around 8th Century and was later brought to Japan.
The Tiger is one of the twelve holy sings of the Chinese and Japanese zodiac, which is much different from Western astrology. It is based on a calendar that originated in ancient China and was brought to Japan around the 8th Century. By the 17th Century, it became widely common in the daily life of Japanese society.
The Tiger was regarded as one of the holy animals in China.
Kumade literally means "Bear's hand." This tool is normally used as a broom for sweeping fallen leaves in Autumn. However, particularly during the New Year's celebration, this tool is believed to collect all happiness and wealth, and is mostly used now by people in business.

By changing the background you can enjoy either a daytime or nighttime "Hanami" cherry blossom viewing.
The Japanese have long thought of the sakura (cherry blossom) as the flower which symbolizes the nation.
It is mentioned in ancient myths, and the way its petals fall while still at the height of their beauty was interpreted by the old warrior class as symbolic of resignation and grace in death, qualities which the warriors rated highly.
There are numerous cherry blossom viewing spots throughout the country and one of the pleasures of life among the Japanese is the chance to hold a sake drinking party beneath a grove of cherry trees in full bloom.
